There are fears in Europe that US President Donald Trump may end his support for Ukraine, disappointed by the failure of his own efforts to resolve the war unleashed by Russia.
The White House has increased pressure on Ukraine and its allies to force them to conclude an agreement with Moscow, causing concern in European capitals and Washington that Trump agrees with Russia's demands, the Financial Times reports.
On Sunday, Trump criticized European and Ukrainian leaders on social media for failing to make progress in ending the war.
Since the US presented its 28-point plan to President Zelensky last week, Kiev's European allies have called for further work on the proposal.
One European official expressed concern that Trump could withdraw support for Ukraine out of frustration, leaving Zelensky and his country in a precarious position.
“This is a scenario we are obviously preparing for,” he said.
European diplomats expect further meetings between France, Germany, and the UK over the next week. Other possible participants include the leaders of Poland and Finland and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“We are trying to come up with something that could be offered as a counterproposal,” the European diplomat said.
