Germany plans to cut ammunition spending next year in favor of other defense industry activities, which could exacerbate the problems facing Rheinmetall AG.

According to the draft budget for 2027, which the government is still subject to change, ammunition spending in 2027 will be approximately €9.6 billion, compared to €11 billion in 2026, Bloomberg reports.

Germany's overall defense spending is expected to rise sharply by 2030.

According to the preliminary budget, nearly €7.7 billion will be spent on ammunition procurement in 2027, while €1.9 billion will be allocated from a special defense fund.

These figures, as before, represent an increase from 2025, when Germany began investing heavily in its defense capabilities and spent a total of less than €4 billion on ammunition procurement.

A spokeswoman for the German Ministry of Defense cannot comment on specific budget items until the federal budget plan is finalized.

"Ammunition procurement is and will remain a priority," she added.

Rheinmetall has fallen out of favor with investors, and its shares have fallen more than 30% this year.

The company, long praised for its specialization in tanks and artillery, is now losing ground to companies supplying drone technology, which has proven indispensable in the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
