Hungary has secured the removal of the provision on the possible acceleration of Ukraine's accession process from the draft final communiqué of the European Council summit.

"Regarding Ukraine's accession process to the EU, the provision on accelerated accession was removed from the text at the last minute, on my initiative. This was not easy," stated Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar.

Magyar noted that after four hours of intensive discussion, we were able to conclude the first item on the agenda of the European Council meeting.

The final document of the summit of heads of state and government contained only the text concerning Ukraine, which had been agreed upon by consensus a year ago. During the several weeks of work on the declaration, it was significantly revised based on Hungarian proposals.

Magyar suggested that for the first time in a year and a half, a final declaration endorsed by all member states could be adopted.

"This is also possible if someone doesn't just come to set the table and instill fear, but also tries to find a compromise," he emphasized.
