Chinese companies have discussed selling weapons to Iran, planning to ship them through other countries to conceal the origin of the military aid.
The U.S. has gathered intelligence indicating that Chinese companies and Iranian officials have discussed arms deliveries. It is unclear how many weapons, if any, were delivered, and to what extent Chinese officials approved the sale, according to The New York Times.
U.S. President Donald Trump will address this issue during his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Similar reports of aid to Tehran have surfaced before, but Beijing has denied them.
Officials familiar with intelligence data have reached differing conclusions regarding whether weapons have already been shipped to third countries. However, it appears that no Chinese weapons have been used on the battlefield against American or Israeli forces since the start of the war against Iran in late February.
U.S. officials consider China’s efforts to supply military equipment to Iran unacceptable and want the Chinese government to block any arms transfers.
