NATO member states have approved a €27 billion program to modernize the military fuel storage and transportation system.

The €27 billion investment includes upgrading existing fuel storage and distribution infrastructure, as well as constructing new facilities, including pipelines, in the eastern and southeastern parts of the Alliance.

NATO noted that this is intended to provide troops with the necessary energy resources to maintain combat readiness.

The project entails a large-scale modernization of a pipeline network, approximately 10,000 kilometers long, built during the Cold War. Its goal is to integrate NATO's existing fuel system in Western Europe with the infrastructure of newer member states in the Alliance's east and north.

This will be the largest and most expensive jointly financed infrastructure project in the organization's history. Its implementation could take up to 30 years and will involve dozens of individual projects.

Allies agreed to increase NATO's total budget for 2027 to €6.5 billion. For comparison, the Alliance's budget for 2026 was €5.3 billion. Member countries also approved joint investment priorities for the next five years.
