Sometimes you need medicine - Trump

Trump noted that foreign governments will have to pay a lot of money to eliminate new duties, Reuters reported.

Trump is not worried about market losses, which already account for nearly $6 trillion of the value of U.S. stocks.

"I don't want anything to go down. But sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something," Trump said.

He spoke over the weekend with leaders from Europe and Asia who hope to persuade him to cut tariffs that will take effect this week by 50 percent.

"They're sitting down at the negotiating table. They want to talk, but there will be no talking unless they pay us a lot of money on an annual basis," he said.
