The US is withdrawing its armed forces and assets from Europe and is demanding that European NATO allies urgently find their own weapons to address defense gaps.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has asked the UK and other NATO members to identify forces and assets not currently allocated to NATO. Washington wants these resources redirected to strengthening the bloc's capabilities, Bloomberg reports.
Trump plans to sharply reduce the amount of military assistance he is prepared to provide for the defense of Europe. This includes a possible 30% reduction in the number of strategic bombers, the complete withdrawal of American reconnaissance and attack drones, and a 50% reduction in the number of warships. The number of US fighter jets in Europe could be reduced by a third.
"As US policy matures and becomes more clear, this is certainly a factor we will have to take into account," said UK Chief of the Defence Staff Richard Knighton.
