US President Donald Trump is ready to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia in exchange for assistance from European allies in demining the Strait of Hormuz.
The contours of a future agreement are now beginning to emerge. Trump is seeking to stabilize the framework ceasefire agreement with Iran. To do this, he needs the military resources of his G7 allies to clear the Strait of Hormuz of mines. In exchange, European leaders expect Trump to support Ukraine in its standoff with Russia, Politico reports.
Previously, there was concern in Europe that Trump could force Ukraine to agree to territorial concessions. These concerns intensified after his hour-long phone call with Putin. However, during the meetings, Trump unexpectedly announced to the leaders that the US was ready to reimpose tough sanctions against the Russian oil sector.
"Russia must make a deal," the US president stated.
The G7 leaders are ready to help demining the Strait, but under certain conditions. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that the deployment of ships is only possible with an official request from the United States and the consent of other parties involved, particularly Iran and Oman.
