The accident occurred on July 27 in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg around 18:10 near the town of Riedlingen in the district of Biberach.
A spokesman for the federal police in Stuttgart said two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express train derailed, BILD reported.
About 100 passengers were on the train at the time of the accident.
Rescuers from the fire department and ambulance service are working on the overturned carriages, trying to reach the passengers. Screams can be heard at the scene.
The cars derailed in the middle of the woods and stopped between trees on a slope. Part of the train is lying on its side and the roof of one of the cars is open. Rescue services are scouring the cars for casualties - probably not all passengers have been found yet.
Police are reporting difficult access to the crash site. Multiple units of police, firefighters and paramedics are on the scene treating the injured.
The rescue service has classified the situation as a “mass casualty incident,” a term that refers to the need to provide medical attention to a large number of people at one time.
The causes of the accident are being determined.
As a result of the railroad accident, three people were killed and 34 others were injured.
