Commenting on the Republicans' disastrous performance in the major elections, US President Donald Trump said that it was due to the shutdown and because his name was not on the ballot.
Tuesday's results served as a warning sign for the president and Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, when the party not in power historically achieves significant success.
“Trump was not on the ballot, and the shutdown are the two reasons Republicans lost the election tonight,” Trump wrote.
The New York mayoral election was won by 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani.
In Virginia and New Jersey, moderate Democrats Abigail Spanberger, 46, and Mikey Sherrill, 53, won their gubernatorial races by a wide margin.
