US President Donald Trump has welcomed the release of an American who was being held in Russia and said he hoped the move would allow the two countries to work towards ending the war in Ukraine.
U.S. presidential envoy Steven Whitkoff visited Moscow on Feb. 11 to pick up American Mark Vogel, a teacher who spent more than three years behind bars on drug charges, Bloomberg reported.
“I think it can be a very important element, and you can be a big part of that because it can be a big, important part of ending the war with Ukraine,” Trump said.
He said the terms of the release were very fair, but did not provide specifics on what concessions, if any, the U.S. made.
Asked if he had spoken to Putin about it, Trump said, “I don't want to say that, I just want to say that I really appreciate what they did in letting Mark go home.”
Trump hinted at another release, saying that someone very special will be coming home on February 12, without specifying who or from where.
