US President Donald Trump has rejected the idea of an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, preferring a diplomatic approach and negotiations with Iran to limit its nuclear program.
Israel developed the strike plan in May. The goal of the strike was to delay Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons for a year or more, The New York Times reported.
U.S. assistance was needed not only to protect Israel from an Iranian response, but also to ensure the attack would be effective.
After months of internal deliberations, Trump decided in favor of diplomacy over military action.
Last Saturday, the U.S. and Iran held talks in Oman - the first time during the Trump administration, including his first presidential term from 2017-2021.
Both countries described the talks as positive and constructive.
A second round of talks is scheduled for Saturday and will likely take place in Rome.
