He confirmed his participation in a meeting with Russian representatives, which took place on January 31 in Miami. US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Whitcoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner also participated in the talks.

When asked what role Kushner played in the negotiations on Russia, Bessent replied that, in his opinion, he acted as a special envoy and mediator.
