US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the introduction of new US sanctions against Russia will depend on the outcome of negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
“I will take that into account. We will see where the peace talks lead,” he said.
Bessent stressed that the Donald Trump administration's sanctions against Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil have already proven effective. According to him, it was these measures that helped bring Russia to the negotiating table, Reuters reports.
He confirmed his participation in a meeting with Russian representatives, which took place on January 31 in Miami. US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Whitcoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner also participated in the talks.
When asked what role Kushner played in the negotiations on Russia, Bessent replied that, in his opinion, he acted as a special envoy and mediator.
