Russia is completing a phased delivery of drones, medical supplies, and food to Iran, helping its ally in the war against the U.S. and Israel.
High-ranking officials from Tehran and Moscow began secretly discussing drone deliveries a few days after Israel and the US attacked Iran. The delivery process began in early March and is expected to be completed by the end of the month, according to the Financial Times.
The exact type of drones that Russia has agreed to send is unknown, but it is believed that Moscow is supplying “Geran-2” drones, which it manufactures itself based on Iranian “Shahed-136” drones.
“Moscow is intervening not only to bolster Iran’s military capabilities but also to ensure broader political stability for the regime in Tehran,” said a senior Western official.
Tehran had asked the Kremlin to provide more advanced air defense systems.
In December 2025, the countries signed an agreement for the delivery of 500 “Verba” man-portable air defense systems and 2,500 missiles for them.
Moscow rejected Iran’s request for S-400 systems—one of Russia’s most advanced air defense systems—likely fearing an escalation in relations with the U.S.
