Shutdown
The US Senate has approved a compromise bill designed to end the longest government shutdown in the country's history.
The bill, supported by 60 votes (against 40), including almost all Republicans and eight Democrats, has been sent to the House of Representatives for final approval, Reuters reports.
The bill will resume funding for federal agencies, which was suspended on October 1, and halt President Donald Trump's campaign to reduce federal staff, preventing any layoffs until January 30.
The agreement will now go to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where Speaker Mike Johnson said he would like to pass it as early as Wednesday and send it to Trump for his signature. Trump called the agreement to reopen the government “very good.”
The agreement will extend funding until January 30, 2026, leaving the federal government on track for an increase in total debt of $38 trillion and an annual deficit of $1.8 trillion.
