The US is negotiating with Putin through Lukashenko

US Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said that the warming of relations with Belarus is linked to Washington's attempts to secure lines of communication with Putin.

According to Kellogg, the US's attention to Lukashenko is explained by the fact that we know he talks to President Putin a lot, reports The Guardian.

"We don't know what he says, but we know he talks to him. But what we did was establish a connection to ensure that the lines of communication were open so that we could make sure that all our messages were getting through to President Putin," he said.

According to Kellogg, this is why the US decided to lift sanctions on the Belarusian state airline Belavia.

“That was the reason why we did it; we weren't going to release political prisoners at first,” he added.

Kellogg stressed that the success in releasing some political prisoners was a positive development, but the overall goal was not to release political prisoners, but to find the best solution to the war between Ukraine and Russia.

He said that the US is not naive about Lukashenko's regime and “we know that if he releases one (prisoner), he will probably capture two more.”

Kellogg added that the agreement with Belarus was for Belavia to repair its planes, as “it is desirable that their planes do not fall out of the sky,” but to make it clear that they should not be used for nefarious purposes and to transport migrants to Europe.
