US President Donald Trump is ready to sign a bill imposing sanctions against Russia if he retains the authority to make the final decision on these measures.
Trump has no objection to Republicans working on a bill to impose sanctions on countries that do business with Russia, Reuters reports.
Trump said they could accept his proposal to add Iran to the sanctions.
Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, both Republicans, authored the bill imposing sanctions on countries that do business with Russia, including buyers of its energy resources.
When asked if Trump was ready to support the bill, an official replied: "He will sign it. He made that clear last night."
But the White House will insist on specific language that ensures Trump retains control over sanctions, the official said.
"It has always been important to the White House and the president that the sanctions package include an exception that ensures the president has the final say on sanctions decisions. So if that is included, I think the president will consider signing the bill," the White House official said.
The official noted that the White House continues to work on negotiations with Russia to end the war: “We are certainly continuing to work on that. It just hasn't been the focus of the news because we have so many other things going on.”
