Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that Ukraine's accession to the EU requires a realistic assessment of Kiev's readiness.
He expressed doubt about the advisability of setting 2027 as the date of accession, Polskie Radio reports.
"I always appreciate creative thinking. Ukraine's accession itself will be a big challenge for both Ukraine and the European Union, because it is a large country, but not a very rich one. At the same time, we must remember that Ukraine has not yet fully implemented the Association Agreement. Therefore, creative thinking is one thing, and political decisions are another," he said.
This refers to discussions about Kyiv's efforts to set 2027 as the date for EU accession in a future peace agreement.
Ukraine first becomes a full member of the EU, and only then, in the process of implementing reforms, joins specific cooperation programs. This applies, in particular, to cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. Sikorski noted that this approach poses a serious procedural challenge.
