U.S. President Donald Trump stated that his representatives are engaged in very constructive negotiations with Iran.

“I am fully aware that my representatives are engaged in very constructive negotiations with Iran and that these negotiations could lead to something very positive for everyone,” he wrote.

Trump stated that the U.S. would begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz as early as Monday as part of an initiative he called “Operation Freedom.”

Trump noted that countries from around the world, almost all of which are not involved in the conflict in the Middle East, have asked the U.S. to free the ships that are stuck in this strategically important strait.

“They are merely neutral and innocent observers! For the sake of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have informed these countries that we will safely escort their ships out of these restricted waterways so that they may go about their business freely and unimpeded,” he said.

Trump noted that these ships come from regions that are in no way involved in the conflict in the Middle East.

“This is a humanitarian gesture on the part of the United States, the countries of the Middle East, but, in particular, Iran,” he said.

He added that if anyone interferes with this process, such interference will be met with a decisive response.

This move comes as the economic consequences of the strait’s closure continue to mount, with gasoline prices in the U.S. now averaging $4.45.
