"This figure includes the cost of ammunition, destroyed equipment, and damage to military bases, but does not include operational costs, which have already been budgeted for the department for fiscal year 2026 and exceed $1 trillion," said CSIS senior adviser Mark Cancian.

The brunt of the costs fell on the Department of Defense; according to preliminary CSIS data, the conflict cost other agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Veterans Affairs, $1 billion, CNN reports.

For consumers: Gas prices rose from an average of less than $3 per gallon nationwide to well over $4 for much of the war.

According to Brown University's Energy Spending Tracker, American households spent $253 more than they would have paid had the war not happened.

Oil from the Middle East has been stopped for almost four months. The world has lost 1.15 billion barrels of oil during the war.

Annual inflation exceeded 4% for the first time in three years, driven by rising energy prices, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Prices are currently rising faster than the average American wage grew over the past year. In other words, inflation ate away your pay raise in April and May—the first time this has happened since 2023.
