U.S. officials have informed their European counterparts that weapons deliveries under previously signed contracts are likely to be delayed due to the war in Iran.

This will affect several European countries, particularly in the Baltic region and Scandinavia, as the war in Iran continues to deplete weapons stocks, Reuters reports.

Some of the weapons in question were purchased by European countries under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program but have not yet been delivered. U.S. officials believe these deliveries will likely be delayed.

These delays underscore how the war against Iran, which began with U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, has started to deplete U.S. stocks of certain critical types of weapons and ammunition.

European officials complain that the delays are putting them in a difficult position.

Under the FMS program, foreign countries purchase U.S.-made weapons with logistical support and approval from the U.S. government.

Even before the war with Iran, the U.S. had effectively depleted billions of dollars’ worth of weapons stockpiles—including artillery systems, ammunition, and anti-tank missiles—since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the start of Israel’s military operations in Gaza in late 2023.

The list of postponed deliveries includes various types of ammunition, particularly those that can be used for both offensive and defensive purposes.
