June 23rd was the hottest day in France since systematic nationwide observations began in 1947.

As of 3:00 PM, the average temperature was 29.6°C, breaking the previous record set in July 2019 (29.4°C), BFMTV reports.

Temperature records were recorded at 339 observation stations, primarily in the western part of the country. The highest temperature in the country was in the Landes department of 44.3°C, while in the Vendée, 44°C was recorded.

The heat continued overnight: in Biscarrosse on the Atlantic coast near Bordeaux, the temperature reached almost 31°C by 4:00 AM, in La Rochelle 29°C, and in Paris 27°C. Combined with other weather factors, the temperature felt several degrees higher than these figures.

On Wednesday, a red alert due to extreme heat was issued for more than half the country – 58 departments, an unprecedented scale.

During the heat wave, 18 deaths have already been recorded, attributed to the extreme temperatures.
