One of the most influential vice presidents in the US has died

The cause of death was complications from pneumonia and cardiovascular disease, CNN reports.

The 46th vice president served alongside Republican President George W. Bush for two terms, from 2001 to 2009.

In recent years, Cheney, a staunch conservative, was largely rejected by his Republican Party for his sharp criticism of President Donald Trump, whom he called a “coward” and the greatest threat to the country in its history.

Cheney suffered from cardiovascular disease for many years and survived a series of heart attacks, but he led a full, energetic life and enjoyed many years of retirement after a heart transplant in 2012, which he called “the gift of life itself” in a 2014 interview.

After leaving the vice presidency, Cheney returned to private life, writing two memoirs — one about his personal and political career, and another about his battle with heart disease — as well as a book with his daughter Liz.
