European Commission will purchase €6 billion worth of weapons for Ukraine

The European Commission's approval of the new purchases complements the already approved plans totaling €16 billion, of which €8.35 billion has already been allocated to Ukraine as part of the defense component of the €90 billion support package.

"On Ukraine's Independence Day, Europe demonstrates that our support is unwavering and concrete. Today, we approved €6.1 billion for air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar systems that Ukraine urgently needs. As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are stepping up efforts to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its airspace. Europe stands in solidarity with Ukraine, and we will provide what it needs, when it needs it," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Most of the procurement will be from EU defense companies. Given Russia's active use of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, the European Commission emphasizes the need to significantly increase EU supplies by reducing stockpiles, reprioritizing orders, and ramping up production.
