Thirty-eight crew members of two foreign oil tankers that caught fire in the Persian Gulf after Iran's attack in Iraqi territorial waters were rescued, but one person died.

Farhan al-Fartousi, head of the Iraqi port company, said that all 38 rescued crew members were foreigners, CNN reports.

Ship tracking data indicates that they were anchored next to each other when the fire started.

The burning ships are the Maltese-flagged Zefyros and the Marshall Islands-flagged Safesea Vishnu.

The registered owner of the Safesea Vishnu is the American company Safesea Transport Inc., while the owner of the Zefyros is based in Greece.

Iran claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying that an underwater drone blew up two oil tankers in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday evening.

Oil terminals ceased operations after the attack.

According to Lieutenant General Saad Maan, head of the media department of Iraq's Joint Operations Command, the attack took place in Iraqi territorial waters. He called the attack a violation of Iraq's sovereignty and said the country reserves the right to take legal action.
