Romania has begun shutting down the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant due to the inability to continue safe operation due to the low Danube River.

On Thursday, at 7:00 a.m., the Cernavoda NPP began shutting down Unit 2. The plant is expected to cease supplying electricity to the grid by approximately 11:00 a.m., Digi24 reports.

"The decision to shut down Unit 2 in a controlled manner is due to the continuing significant drop in the Danube River water level. The controlled shutdown of Unit 2 is being carried out in accordance with established procedures for such situations... Specialists will decide whether to restart the reactors based on further forecasts regarding the Danube river water situation," announced the operator, Nuclearelectrica.

The Cernavoda NPP supplied 680 MW to the country's power grid.
