The UK intends to begin negotiations on joining the EU’s £78 billion ($106 billion) loan for Ukraine.
Britain’s intentions are further evidence of deepening European defense ties amid mounting pressure from the US, Reuters reports.
The British government noted that the additional funding could also open up opportunities for British companies to meet Ukraine’s urgent needs, particularly in the defense sector.
The UK, which has imposed a wide range of sanctions against Russia since the war began in 2022, will also announce a new package of tough sanctions against Russian companies this week to disrupt military equipment supply chains.
Starmer’s visit, the first by a British leader to Armenia since former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1990, comes as the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump urges Europe to take on greater responsibility for the continent’s defense.
European countries, particularly Germany, France, and the UK, have recently faced additional pressure from Washington after refusing to join the US and Israel in a war against Iran.
