Venezuela earthquake: 1,450 dead

The death toll from the natural disaster has already reached 1,450, with tens of thousands more missing, according to the Associated Press.

Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez stated that the search for survivors will continue. According to the government, more than 2,600 rescuers from around the world, equipped with specially trained search dogs and heavy equipment, have arrived in the country.

The twin earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 that struck on June 24 caused massive destruction. The UN estimates that approximately 6.8 million people may have been affected by the natural disaster.

More than 770 buildings were completely or partially destroyed by the earthquakes. The risk of further damage remains high as Venezuela continues to shake: new aftershocks measuring 4.2 and 4.5 magnitudes were recorded on Sunday morning.

Due to the chaos and persistent mobile phone outages following the earthquake, many Venezuelans have turned to non-governmental online platforms and databases to report missing loved ones. One such database has registered more than 50,000 missing people, although it is still unknown how many have been found.

More than 3,100 injured people have received medical care, many of whom suffered serious injuries.

Rodriguez is creating a special commission to assess the damage to housing and determine whether it is safe for people currently forced to sleep on the streets to return home.
