Venezuela Earthquake: nearly 2,000 dead

The disaster has injured more than 10,570 people. Approximately 900 buildings were damaged, 189 of which were completely destroyed, and more than 650 partially collapsed, according to The Guardian.

According to the UN International Organization for Migration, the disaster could have affected up to 6.8 million people, who will need shelter, drinking water, sanitation, medical care, and basic necessities.

An initial assessment of satellite data released by NASA suggests the likelihood of much more severe and widespread damage. Researchers from Oregon State University have concluded that approximately 58,870 buildings were likely damaged or destroyed in the region.

The WHO has warned of possible disease outbreaks as Venezuela's overwhelmed and damaged healthcare system struggles to cope with the aftermath of the earthquakes.

The organization stated that there is an increased risk of measles and diphtheria outbreaks due to low vaccination rates before the earthquake, as well as yellow fever, malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus outbreaks.
