The U.S. Department of Defense has asked the White House to approve a request to Congress for more than $200 billion to fund further military operations in Iran.

This amount significantly exceeds the cost of the ongoing airstrike campaign. The funds are intended to be used for an urgent increase in the production of critical weapons that have been expended by American and Israeli forces during strikes on thousands of targets over the past three weeks, reports The Washington Post.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Steven Fainberg is overseeing the preparation of the request and has already drafted a series of measures to quickly address the shortage of precision-guided munitions and mobilize the U.S. defense-industrial complex.

The cost of the war is rising rapidly and exceeded $11 billion in just the first week of hostilities. Some White House officials doubt that Congress will approve such a massive request. Experts point to the limited ability of U.S. industry to rapidly ramp up production due to labor shortages and material shortages.
