A massive explosion occurred at a thermal power plant in Bucharest

According to the Emergency Situations Agency (ISU), the fire started in two electrical transformers but subsequently spread to a third, Hot News reports.

The main challenge for rescue workers was the burning of fuel oil, of which there were 30 tons on site.

Due to the fire in Bucharest, a brief power outage was observed.

Raed Arafat, head of the National Emergency Service, reported that about a dozen specialized vehicles were working at the scene. Firefighters were forced to work in dangerous conditions without the assistance of special robots.

“Unfortunately, the firefighting robots are undergoing maintenance... Firefighters will now work without robots, but there is no risk of explosion for them; the problem lies in the burning fuel oil, which needs to be brought under control,” Arafat clarified.

By 1 a.m., firefighters had managed to stop the spread of the fire. Work was underway to cool the incident area.

There were no casualties as a result of the fire. The RO-Alert civil defense warning system was not activated, as the facility is located a considerable distance from residential buildings, and the smoke was not critically thick.

The power supply to the thermal power plant itself was cut off for safety reasons.

The cause of the explosion will be determined once the fire has been completely extinguished.
