NATO to abandon annual summits

NATO is discussing the possibility of abandoning annual summits and transitioning to a less frequent format for meetings of Alliance leaders.

Internal discussions are considering the option of holding summits every two years. Some countries suggest that the 2028 summit may not take place, but a final decision has not yet been made, Reuters reports.

Some diplomats and analysts have long argued that annual summits create pressure to produce high-profile results, which distracts from long-term planning.

The discussions are broader in nature and are not limited to specific political circumstances.

One source stated: “It is better to hold fewer summits than bad summits.”

A NATO spokesperson emphasized that the Alliance will continue to hold regular meetings of heads of state and government, and that between summits, allies will continue to consult and make decisions on common security issues.

The decision on possible changes to the format and frequency of summits, as noted, remains a subject of further discussion among NATO member states.
