Earthquake in Afghanistan kills more than 800 people

At least 2,800 people were injured in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, Reuters reports.

Health Ministry spokesman Sharaf Zaman called on the international community to provide assistance in dealing with the aftermath of the disaster. He noted that the Taliban administration's resources are depleted.

According to Kate Carey of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the earthquake zone has been hit by heavy rain in the previous 24-48 hours, increasing the risk of landslides and mudslides, which has left many roads impassable.

Rescuers and authorities are trying to quickly destroy animal carcasses to minimize the risk of water contamination.

Authorities warn that the death toll could rise as rescue teams gradually reach isolated areas.

China has expressed its willingness to assist with disaster relief in accordance with Afghanistan's needs and within its capabilities.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said India had delivered 1,000 tents to Kabul and 15 tons of food to Kunar province, with additional humanitarian aid planned from Tuesday.
